How To Nail Your Pitch Deck: What The Best Ones All Have – William Rosellini

By William Rosellini – Your pitch deck is what stands between your idea and your success. It’s not enough for you to know that your startup is great — that sentiment has to fully resonate with the room of investors you’re selling it to. If they don’t buy, nobody will.

What exactly does a winning pitch deck have, then? We’ve scoured hundreds of successful pitches to find what it was they had in common, and how you too can nail your pitch deck!

The ultimate goal is to tell the story of your brand and company, why and how you are different from what is already on the market, and why they need to be a part of it. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, these are the key areas to focus on:

  • Cover Page – start strong to get their attention early; use bold visuals throughout your presentation and have a bolder message
  • Elevator Pitch – a brief but concise outline of what you’re doing and why they should care
  • About Us; Leadership – who are the driving forces behind this company and how will you bring your shared experiences together to shape this?
  • Vision – this is where you transfer that vision; what you want your brand to be
  • Mission Statement – what is it you’re setting out to achieve; how are you different?
  • Milestones – those wins you’ve had up to now, this is the time to proudly display them
  • Timeline – while only a projection, your timeline shows prospective investors that you’ve done the research, you have big plans, and you know not only how you’re going to do it, but when
  • Customers’ Pain; Problem – where is the gap that needs to be filled; what is the problem that needs to be solved?
  • Solution; Product – your product is the solution to the above; this is where you explain why and how
  • Conversion – what does your sales funnel look like; where do people drop off and where and how will you convert them?
  • Market Size and Growth; Competition – show them the data; how will you gain market share? Will the industry itself grow, and if so how, where do you fit in? Who is dominating the space now and who is up-and-coming? Why are you better?
  • Revenue Model – among one of the most important slides, how will you bring money in?
  • Product Pricing Model – not far off your revenue slide, your pricing model gives them a breakdown of what you’ll charge
  • Metrics – how will you measure and scale your success?
  • Financials – the pressing numbers; P&L projections, where money is reinvested in the business, and everything in between

Finish strong — remind them who you are, where to find out more, and how to reach you. Everything they need to know is covered in the points above, you need only to extract that information and put it together in a compelling way.
